From Boardroom to Beach:
The Practicalities of a Digital Nomad Consultant Lifestyle
There’s a growing tribe of professionals ditching corner offices and glass boardrooms in favour of coworking cafés, Airbnb apartments, and 11am swims in warm oceans.
And I’m one of them.
As a seasoned ICT consultant with decades of experience in the corporate world, I’ve traded boardroom politics and permanent parking bays for global flexibility and lifestyle-first decision-making.
But I’m not a backpacker with a laptop.
I’m a professional — still advising clients on digital transformation, IT strategy, governance, and cyber resilience. The only difference? I don’t need to be in Sandton to deliver.
This is what the digital nomad consultant lifestyle looks like — not in theory, but in practice.
Why I Chose This Path
After years in corporate roles and consulting gigs tied to a physical location, I realised something:
Almost all of my value comes from thinking, writing, advising, designing, and solving — not from where I physically sit.
If I could:
- Stay connected,
- Deliver outcomes,
- Communicate clearly…
…then I could work from anywhere. And I do.
The Foundations of a Nomadic Consulting Life
There’s a myth that this lifestyle is chaotic or unprofessional. In truth, it requires more structure, not less. Here’s what I’ve put in place to make it work:
1. Systems and Tools That Travel With Me
- Google Workspace: My digital HQ
- Monday.com, Google Meet, Google Chat: Seamless comms and collaboration
- ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude: AI partners that travel light
- 1Password & VPNs: Cybersecurity without compromise
- eSIMs and global data plans: Stay online anywhere
These tools ensure that my clients experience consistency — no matter what timezone I’m in.
2. A Remote-Friendly Service Model
I focus on services that are output-driven:
- Strategy documents
- Architecture designs
- Frameworks and policies
- Stakeholder interviews and diagnostics
- Retained advisory
Because I define my value by outcomes — not hours in a chair — I can work asynchronously and remotely with ease.
3. Clear Client Communication
Remote success comes down to one thing: managing expectations.
- I communicate availability and time zones upfront.
- I over-deliver on timelines to build trust.
- I stay reachable — but not 24/7.
It’s not about being always on. It’s about being always dependable.
4. A Mobile Business Back Office
- Cloud accounting & invoicing
- International payment platforms
- Virtual admin support
- Simple CRM and lead tracking tools
This ensures that my business runs smoothly — whether I’m in Cape Town, Croatia, or Costa Rica.
5. Challenges No One Talks About
Let’s be real — it’s not all sunsets and espresso in Lisbon.
- Time zones can be tricky — especially for workshops or exec meetings.
- Connectivity is non-negotiable — and not all Airbnbs deliver.
- Boundaries blur — it’s easy to feel “always at work”.
But with discipline and planning, these are manageable. The freedom more than makes up for it.
6. The Benefits? Profound.
- Focus: Fewer distractions. More deep work.
- Inspiration: New places spark better thinking.
- Lifestyle: A life by design — not by default.
- Clients: They get a sharp, focused, agile consultant.
And yes — I still meet clients in person when needed. But those are choices, not requirements.
7. Is This Lifestyle for You?
If you’re a senior professional or independent consultant, you don’t need to burn out in a boardroom to stay relevant. You can redesign your life without sacrificing impact or income.
Start small:
- Take your next engagement remote.
- Spend a month in a new city.
- Rewire your delivery model around outcomes.
You don’t need to disappear. Just unplug from the old model.
Final Thought
In 2025, the most valuable consultants aren’t tied to desks — they’re tied to outcomes.
The boardroom is wherever I log in. And the beach? Well, that’s just a bonus.
