AI Agents: Your Newest and Most Autonomous Attack Surface

Your teams are moving fast. They want efficiency. They want automation. To achieve this, they are deploying autonomous AI agents to handle scheduling, data retrieval, and even code generation.

How do you audit a thought process? Unlike standard software, AI agent actions are not always predictable. You need logging systems that track not just the output, but the reasoning steps the agent took to get there.

What is the “Kill Switch” protocol? You must have a way to instantly revoke an agent’s autonomy without crashing the underlying systems it supports.

Do not wait for a breach to define your stance. Start with these actions:

  1. Inventory Every Agent: Map where autonomous tools are being used, even those hidden in “Shadow IT” departments.
  2. Define Intent: Document exactly what each agent is allowed to do. If its job is to summarize meetings, it has no business accessing your CRM.
  3. Pressure Test Vendor Claims: Vendors will tell you their AI is secure. Demand to see their data handling policies and how they prevent prompt injection.

Innovation should not come at the cost of sovereignty. Autonomous tools offer immense value, but only if you remain the one in control of the perimeter.
